At SIS we recognize the importance of supporting a child's home language. Many of our students begin their lives learning a different language to the one of instruction at school. This home language enables students to communicate with their family and supports their cultural identity and promotes bilingualism.
As a Primary (ECC/ES) school we want to explore ways in which we can provide support to our students to continue developing and maintaining their home language.
At the beginning of the new academic year we will collect information from our parents so that we can look at putting a home language support programme in place. Please note that this will not be for students to learn a foreign language. Most likely this would be run after school with volunteer parents and/or teachers who have a proficiency in one of the languages that is represented in our school. As the medium of instruction in our school is English and we offer Chinese and German our goal will be to look at offering after school classes to develop other languages represented in our school.
The purpose of the home language programme is to provide opportunity for students to develop appropriate skills in their mother tongue according to their age level.
