Kindergarten Students Sell T-shirts to Save Endangered Species
Posted 06/01/2017 11:35AM

Every year in Kindergarten, science and literacy meet in research around animals. This year Ms. Erlendson's kindergarten (KC) class took it a step further by adding a social impact component along with focusing on a common core standard that calls for exploration around production and distribution of writing. KC students learned about the concept of living things being endangered/extinct, then began questioning if humans could go extinct. They set off on an inquiry into how and why things become endangered or extinct and found themselves with a wealth of information about the connections between humans and endangered animals. With focused research on a chosen endangered animal they then chose a means for distributing not only information about their animal, but how our actions as humans can help endangered animals. Distribution methods included: youtube, twitter, t-shirts, stickers, and music. With the help of art teacher Katie Hobbs and Learning Innovation Director Mark McElroy, students set off using tools such as computers and iPads to plan, edit, produce, and distribute their writing in different ways. T-shirts were sold to SIS staff and parents of KC to raise money for a conservation group of the class' choice and stickers will be distributed this week to every student in the elementary school. Videos, twitter posts, and original music can be found on the class twitter at https://twitter.com/ClassKCsis
