8th Graders Connect Technology, Invention, and Innovation
Posted 04/13/2017 09:47AM
For the 2nd year in a row, 8th Grade Students created the Technological Impact Museum and Exhibit, TIMEII. The goal of the museum is to connect the processes of technology, invention, and innovation that began during the Industrial Revolution, to our modern world. This year the museum was called "TIMEII: A Shenzhen Story", as the students tried to make connections to ideas evidence of technological progress, in their world, and the city they live in.

Students were divided into interest groups and themes: From "How we Live" and "How we Work", to "How we Thrive" and "How we Learn". The museum became a student-centered investigation into the progress, and the problems, associated with technologies, in all aspects of our lives. Groups researched, designed, constructed, then presented their information as an interactive set of exhibits. Five students had the roles of Museum Curators, who coordinated the work of all exhibitors and helped to ensure the design aesthetic and logistics of the museum. Level 5, with its adaptive and flexible space, complete with makers resources, moveable whiteboards and furniture, along with additional guidance and support from John Burns, transformed to become the ideal space for the project.

On the day of the exhibition, over 300 students from four different schools attended, along with parents, staff, and community members. The project was the culmination of critical thinking skill, collaborative practice, student agency and creativity, along with hands-on design and application. The authentic audience allowed students to showcase their understanding and receive valuable feedback. The entire museum took four days to create, when it was deconstructed, the students were able to reset Level 5 in 27 minutes. Students reflected on their learning and continue to curate a digital space on Edublogs.
